Explorations in Art

  The Romantic Era  The Romantic Era was placed around 1790-1880 in Europe. This movement was expressed/portrayed differently for each artist; they used scenes of love, horror, beauty, peace, and anger. I have selected four paintings: two with more of a horror scene and two with a landscape theme.  The painting above is The Nightmare By Henry Fuseli. This painting was shown in the Royal Academy in 1782. Fuseli used lines to give a three-dimensional look, tone to contrast light and dark, and color to create a creepy mood. The portrayed emotions would be scary because of the demon on top of the girl. Fuseli was trying to demonstrate weight being put onto the chest (physical pain) you can experience during a dream.  The painting above is called Saturn Devouring One of His Children  by Francisco De Goya.             Revolution and Art - 1700s  The Death of General Mercer at the Battle of Princeton by John Trumbull. This painting is from 1786-1831 and created in New Jersey. Trumbull started working on this piece in the 1780s, which took up much of his time. This painting was the one he was most proud of creating.  Siege de Yorktown by Louise-Charles-Auguste Couder. This painting was created in 1826 and made in Virginia. This painting represents the surrender at Yorktown, Virginia, from the British army.  Battle of Long Island by Alonzo Chappel. This painting was created in 1858 and made in Long Island. This painting has a lot of courage because the people in Maryland made a lot of sacrifices, which drove everyone to continue to fight.  These paintings were part of the Revolution, a massive event during the Classical Era.  "Girl with a Pearl Earring" by Johannes Vermeer   The artwork in the Baroque era is fascinating, and I love how the pieces bring off a dramatic and mysterious vibe. This era took place between 1590 and 1740, mainly in Europe, France, Italy, Netherlands, and Germany. There were a lot of famous Artists during this time; the one that I found interesting was Johannes Vermeer. He was mainly known for household painting, but I chose his painting called "Girl with a Pearl Earring." This painting was created in 1665 in Delft, Netherlands, where Vermeer spent his whole life. He used elements such as tone, color, and shape. He used the element shape to make the pearl earring stand out. His painting also looks very real/3D. The presentation is immaculate and has a dramatic look to it, with a black background for a dark look, which always makes the girl in the painting shine.  The Garden of Earthly Delights  This painting is from the Northern Renaissance, from 1400-1600. The Northern Renaissance was known for oil painting and linear perspective, focusing on experiences, people, and animals. Hieronymus Bosch painted the Garden of Earthly Delight between 1490-1510; it took him twenty years to complete, I'm not sure where the painting was created, but right now it is located in Madrid, Spain.  This painting stuck out to me because everything that is going on in the image is very chaotic. Bosch used multiple art elements for this painting, such as color, shapes, and form. He uses the colors green and blue for a natural look, and he uses color to set a pattern with the people and animals in his painting. He uses shape to give off a movement vibe; everything in his picture seems to be moving or doing something. Bosch uses form to create a 3D painting.
