"Girl with a Pearl Earring" by Johannes Vermeer

The artwork in the Baroque era is fascinating, and I love how the pieces bring off a dramatic and mysterious vibe. This era took place between 1590 and 1740, mainly in Europe, France, Italy, Netherlands, and Germany. There were a lot of famous Artists during this time; the one that I found interesting was Johannes Vermeer. He was mainly known for household painting, but I chose his painting called "Girl with a Pearl Earring." This painting was created in 1665 in Delft, Netherlands, where Vermeer spent his whole life. He used elements such as tone, color, and shape. He used the element shape to make the pearl earring stand out. His painting also looks very real/3D. The presentation is immaculate and has a dramatic look to it, with a black background for a dark look, which always makes the girl in the painting shine. The emotion I get from this painting is mysterious because I don't know what the girl is looking at or thinking and why the pearl earring is so significant. I would own a copy of this painting because it draws people in, and there could be a good conversation.

This painting connects with royalty's influence, which had a massive part in the Baroque era. This painting's primary focus is the pearl that the girl is wearing, and at the time, pearls "were very fashionable" (Johannes); it would represent wealth and beauty.

  1. I really like the contrast in this painting, the way her face and head scarf are illuminated so brightly while her back and the background fade into the dark is striking and dramatic, as so many baroque pieces are. I wonder how common it was to have a pearl earring as large and lustrous as this one, certainly, it would take some wealth to purchase such an item. It makes me wonder if this girl is meant to be anyone in particular, or if she is merely painted for the sake of it.

  2. I also enjoyed looking at art from the Baroque era because I found it to be a bit darker and mysterious. I actually almost chose this painting to do my blog post on because I really liked this specific piece. I find the girls face to be very pretty and I like how the shadows bring almost a natural light type glow to her skin. I also really like the muted shades used in the painting. It makes the blue really stand out.

  3. I ironically also chose this painting. I found it refreshing and extremely relatable. I felt the depiction looks like any natural women. I love the black background because it really brings the young lady to the forefront.
