Introduction

Hello! 

My name is Shannon Holan. I am from North Pole, Alaska. I have lived here my whole life...21 years. I am an outdoors person, so I enjoy the hikes, fishing, and hunting in Alaska. The winters are super cold, but I don't mind since I have a lot of hobbies, such as snowmaching, playing hockey, and ice fishing. I am also a volleyball coach for one of the high schools in my area. I have been coaching for two years now, and I love it! I am not very artistic, but I do enjoy trying my best to draw, paint, etc. I love going to art museums or looking at other people's artwork. I am looking forward to this class!



I uploaded my favorite painting from Vincent Van Gogh. I first attended an art exhibit in Kansas City, MI, for Van Gogh, and I fell in love with the experience. Being able to walk around the room, having Van Gogh's paintings all over, and staying to look at it for however long you wanted. I enjoyed his work, but the sunflower field got my attention because of how well Van Gogh used colors to make the sunflowers pop in this painting. I later found out that Van Gogh painted sunflowers because they communicate the meaning of being thankful/showing appreciation, which meant a lot to me.

  The Romantic Era  The Romantic Era was placed around 1790-1880 in Europe. This movement was expressed/portrayed differently for each artist; they used scenes of love, horror, beauty, peace, and anger. I have selected four paintings: two with more of a horror scene and two with a landscape theme.  The painting above is The Nightmare By Henry Fuseli. This painting was shown in the Royal Academy in 1782. Fuseli used lines to give a three-dimensional look, tone to contrast light and dark, and color to create a creepy mood.  The Great Depression       The Great Depression began in 1929 and ended in 1939, it was a long and an extremely bad decline in the economic activity. There was a lot of unemployment's during this time which made it difficult for people to pay for the mandatory things and they ended up losing their houses and many more. The stock market crashed, it effected individuals, businesses, and banks. During this time a lot of immigration happened hoping they can find work somewhere else, a lot of crime started to occur, living standards also dropped.       "Sharecroppers' Revolt" by Joseph Paul Vorst was created in January of 1939 in Missouri. Vorst created this piece to represent the effects that happened during the Great Depression. Farmers got evicted from their house and had to move into shacks.             Revolution and Art - 1700s  The Death of General Mercer at the Battle of Princeton by John Trumbull. This painting is from 1786-1831 and created in New Jersey. Trumbull started working on this piece in the 1780s, which took up much of his time. This painting was the one he was most proud of creating.  Siege de Yorktown by Louise-Charles-Auguste Couder. This painting was created in 1826 and made in Virginia. This painting represents the surrender at Yorktown, Virginia, from the British army.  Battle of Long Island by Alonzo Chappel. This painting was created in 1858 and made in Long Island. This painting has a lot of courage because the people in Maryland made a lot of sacrifices, which drove everyone to continue to fight.  These paintings were part of the Revolution, a massive event during the Classical Era.
